Pedestrian Walkways
Always use paths designed to keep you separate from moving machinery. There are no exceptions to this rule.
ALWAYS!
Use pedestrian crossing points to cross an equipment movement area. Pedestrians must follow the flagman/spotter in case any instructions are given.
DO!
Always use designated walkways. They are your safe zone.
DON'T!
Never take shortcuts through active work zones or machine paths.
Exclusion Zones
Keep minimum safe distance from operating machinery. These "Exclusion Zones" are danger areas. Refer to the list below for specific exclusion zones for each equipment type.
Wheel Loader
10m front/rear, 5m sides
Excavator
Full 360-degree swing
Telehandler
6m all directions (forks/booms)
Skid Steer Loader
5m all around
Forklift
5m front/rear, 3m sides
Truck
10m front/rear
CRITICAL REMINDER: Never enter an exclusion zone without establishing positive communication with the operator first! Refer to the 'Communication' tab for how to establish positive communication.
Positive Communication Steps
Before entering a machine's exclusion zone, follow these four steps to ensure the operator sees you and has safely stopped the machine. This is a non-negotiable safety procedure.
Establish Line of Sight
Make sure you can see the operator and they can see you. Never approach from a blind spot.
Stop Outside the Zone
Stay safely outside the machine's exclusion zone boundary until you get the operator's attention.
Attract Attention
Use a clear hand signal (like a wave) to get the operator's attention. Confirm they have seen you.
Seek & Receive Permission
Wait for the operator to give you a clear, affirmative signal (like a thumbs-up) to approach using hand signal, or verbal communication.
Operator Immediate Actions
If a person approaches your machine, perform these actions immediately to ensure their safety. This sequence makes the machine safe for interaction.
Stop
Cease all movement and machine functions.
Deactivate
Put machine controls in neutral or standby.
Lower Boom/Attachments
Lower all buckets, forks, or booms to the ground.
Engage Brake
Set the parking brake to prevent any movement.
Hands Off
Take hands and feet off all operational controls.
Working Inside a Zone
When a ground worker is cleared to work with an operator inside an exclusion zone, these rules must be strictly followed by both parties to prevent incidents.
- 👀 Maintain constant line of sight between worker and operator.
- 🐢 Operator only moves on direct instruction, at dead slow speed.
- 🛑 Operator stops immediately if sight is lost.
- 🔒 Never work in a crush zone without specific Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
Visual Site Controls
These are the common visual safety controls used on site to manage MMI risks. Learn to recognize them and always obey what they signify.
Walkway Demarcation
All pedestrian walkways will be demarcated using barriers and signages.
Physical Barriers
Barricades and guardrails used to physically prevent entry into dangerous areas.
Refer to the sitemap displayed in relevant areas to update yourself about the changes reflected on a dynamic basis.
